The Birnova commune

Location

The commune Barnova is situated at the south-eastern limit of Iasi and it’s near the Tomesti and Schitu Duca in the east, near the Dobrovat in south and near the commune Ciurea in the west.

Population

The commune Barnova has a total population of 4540 inhabitants with the following structure:
* Active population -1557
* Occupied population -1498
* Unemployed - 27

The territorial component

Barnova has comprises 6 (six) villages :
* Barnova - was documentary attested in 1840
* Pietraria was mentioned for the first time in 1801 by some documents and in 1846 by other papers
* Todirel
* Paun - was documentary attested in 1835
* Visan - was documentary attested in 1820 and also in 1833.
* Cercu - the hamlet Cercu was mentioned in official documents in 1845.

Surface

The administrative area of Barnova is 4122 ha, of which:
* 4.652 ha agricultural land
* 1.564 ha non-agricultural land

Income

The average income per capita in Ciurea was 647 lei in 2008.

Touristic objectives/ protected areas/ monuments

Historical monument, the Monastery Barnova, was built in the XVII century by Miron Barnovschi- Movila(1629) and Eustatie Dabija, with its beautiful belfry bilt in 1667, cells and inside wall since 1728

The “Sfantul Ioan Botezatorul” church was founded by Ion Inculet (1884-1940), political man and the leader of “Sfatul Tarii (County Advice)” in Basarabia; this church is also his necropolis. Touristic objectives in Barnova are the “Ion Inculet” memorial house , “Repedea” Hill, the “Piatra Sfanta” Monastery, the “Sfintii Apostoli Petru si Pavel” church Paun

Technical infrastructure

1. Water supply: execution of water supply network
2. Sewerage: no sewage
3. Transportation:
* Road - there are 6 km to the national road and 15 km to Iasi
* Railway – there is the CFR station Bârnova
4. Gas distribution: no network of gas supply.
In the villages Visan and Paun there are private gas distributors for those who want to connect to a network of gas.
5. Electricity: Of 1500 houses, just 95% of it benefits of electricity.

Main activities

The main activity in Barnova is agriculture. Because of the agricultural activity, the commune may seal meet, milk and grapes. The commune should benefit from tourism development, because of the large number of tourist objectives.
